The Comité du film ethnographique propose a new issue of Regards Comparés, under the title of "French Identities and Immigrations". Organized in collaboration with the musée de l’Homme, the musée du quai Branly and the CNRS, this manifestation tends to relate different representations of the migratory phenomena, of its components and circumstances. The aim is also to confront various and specific visions of "migrants" and "nationals", making use of the first filmed images concerning that question, up to recent and contemporary situations during which questioning glances are exchanged and are asking.
|
We propose a program with the following main themes: |
After the First World War, political and economical crises
- Archival footage reporting the first French regards on the “foreign” realities, economical European migrations (Polish, Belgian and Italian), exotic ones (more specially the peoples brought for colonial exhibitions), the presence of colonial army units in France, the first implantations of Asian workers and political migration phenomena concerning notably "white" Russians, Armenians, central Europe Jewishes, Spanish Republicans… |
Consequences of World War II
- Reasons of departure: political and economical crises, decolonization and independence wars, …Portuguese, North African and “Indochinese” migrations…
- Travel conditions and arrival in France : frontiers, escap agent, stowaways; cultural differences, the law and its embezzlements.
- Lapses of the memory
|
From shantytown to slums
- Ways of reception, insertion and integration; ways of living: from the shantytown to slums; repression, segregation, assimilation ; school, education, formation, second generation and politics.
- Films expressing the immigrant point of view
- Films showing a global reflection on migration phenomena
- Fictions films (fragments) helping to apprehend various possible ways to represent alterity

The screenings will take place alternatively at the Musée de l’Homme et au Musée du Quai Branly. They will be followed by discussions open to the spectators. We will benefit from the presence of colleagues specialized in migration studies. The debates aim to participate in the general reflection concerning the constitutive modalities of our culture and our society. They are also essential for a reconsideration of the audiovisual language as a way to construct and deconstruct the reality: relativity of prospects and glances will be here under questions.
