Pendant une année, nous suivons une famille rom extrêmement démunie. Elle parcourt les montagnes et les vallées, vendant son artisanat dans les villages pour essayer de survivre. À travers leurs paroles et leurs rapports avec les sédentaires, nous découvrons un univers religieux et mythique qui imprègne toutes leurs activités.

Over a year, the film follows a poverty-stricken Roma family from the south Carpathians. They move from their mountain dwelling to villages in the valley, selling handmade goods in their struggle for survival. Through their words and their relations with local Romanian shepherds and the rich 'Baseii' from the village, the film uncovers the religious and mythic structures which inform their everyday existence.

À travers la vie de sa famille et ses propres interrogations, la réalisatrice nous fait découvrir de l'intèrieur l'épopée de la Roumanie depuis 1989. Son père, avocat réputé, joua un rôle important dans la révolution et la chute de Ceausescu. Il dénonça les abus de la Securitate (anciens services secrets roumains). Mais depuis, entre menaces et mépris, les choses se sont compliquées pour lui et les membres de sa famille.

The director's father played a critical role in the Romanian revolution and the fall of Ceausescu. As the lawyer of Laszlo Tokes he publicly denounced the Romanian secret service. In the years since, the political repercussions have invaded the family sphere, and the family has had to endure countless controversies, death threats, and betrayals. The film is an attempt to unpick and make sense of the fraught and perplexing history of both family and country; “Is my father a hero or a fool? And what does it mean to me?”

En 1989, après la chute du communisme, des milliers de Saxons ont quitté la Transylvanie pour s'installer en Allemagne. Si les jeunes ont montré de l'enthousiasme, rêvant d'un futur prospère en Occident, les plus vieux ont vécu cet exode comme un véritable traumatisme, laissant derrière eux leurs champs et leur héritage culturel. Le film suit un couple âgé ayant quelque temps décidé de rester seul dans leur village. Mais, devant l'abandon général, ils partent rejoindre le reste de la famille en Allemagne.

In 1989, after the collapse of Communism in Romania, thousands of Saxons emigrated to Germany. Yet this mass exodus was severed between the enthusiasm of the young in anticipation of a renewed and prosperous future, and the reticence of the older generation to abandon their home, history, and cultural legacy. The film follows an elderly couple left behind in a Romanian village, and their decision to renounce their home and emigrate to Germany to reunite with the rest of their family.
