Portrait d'un maître médium et de sa communauté à Hanoi, ce film montre comment les homosexuels, dans un Vietnam homophobe, ont, depuis des siècles, trouvé dans le culte de la déesse mère Dao Mau les moyens de s'exprimer et de se rassembler et comment les effets de la globalisation modifient leur style de vie et leur identité. |
Through the daily-life story of a master spirit-medium in Hanoi and his vibrant community, this observational film explores how effeminate and gay men in homophobic Vietnam have for centuries found community and expression in a Mother Goddess Cult, and how the impacts of globalisation are changing their lifestyle and identity. |

Nguyen Trinh Thi is an independent documentary filmmaker from Hanoi. Her professional work experience includes working as a journalist for Reuters and the BBC. She holds a Master’s degree in Journalism and a Master’s in Pacific International Affairs, and has trained in Photography, Ethnographic Film, and Editing. |

Une exploration de la transsexualité dans le cadre islamique, en Iran. Bardia, un jeune transsexuel, femme devenue homme, réfléchit sur son enfance passée dans le « mauvais » corps, quand il était connu sous le nom de Roya (« rêve » en perse), mais souhaitait devenir Omid (« espoir »). Sa narration est entrecoupée des commentaires perspicaces de transsexuels iraniens : Donya, Handry, Leila and Shirin qui endurent le mépris quotidien de la société dans leur nouveau rôle de femme. |
An exploration of transsexuality in muslim Iran. Bardia, a young female-to-male transsexual reflects on his childhood spent in the wrong body, when he was known as Roya ('dream' in Persian), but wished to be Omid ('hope' in Persian). His narrative is interpolated by the insightful comments of several male-to-female transsexuals in Iran - Donya, Handry, Leila and Shirin - who have had to endure the daily scorn of society in their new roles as women. |

Elhum Shakerifar is a British Iranian filmmaker, photographer and visual anthropologist. Her work explores the status and rights of social marginalities -ranging from gender issues in Islamic cultures (particularly temporary marriage and transsexuality) to portrayals of mental and physical disability in contemporary Western societies. ‘Roya and Omid’ is Elhum’s first film. |

Born 1980, raised in Berlin, Saskia graduated in 2005 from the Granada Centre for Visual Anthropology at the University of Manchester with the film Riding the Wind of Change which was screened at several festivals. In 2007, she finished the Cultural Studies programme at the European University Viadrina. She is currently working at ma.ja.de. filmproduktion. |
