Les femmes de San Costantino Albanaises et de San Paolo Albanaises chantent les anciens vjeshet, transmis de mère en fille. Ces chants racontent la fuite des Albanais venus chercher refuge dans le sud de l'Italie il y a cinq cents ans. En 1954, l'anthropologue Ernesto de Martino organisa une expédition pour enregistrer ces chants, en ne se doutant pas que, quarante ans plus tard, les femmes elles-mêmes feraient connaître leur art dans le monde entier en donnant des concerts en Italie, mais aussi en France et en Albanie.

The women of St. Costantino and St. Paul Albanese sing ancient vjeshet, songs passed down from mother to daughter. They sing of the flight of the Albanian people to seek shelter in Southern Italy, five centuries ago. Already in 1954, the anthropologist Ernesto De Martino organised an expedition to these two villages and recorded the vjeshet. Yet now, more than 40 years later, it is the women themselves who preserve and promote these songs, giving concerts throughout Italy, and even in France and Albania.

Sous le régime communiste roumain, les fanfares des paysans connurent leur heure de gloire. Avec la désindustrialisation, les musiciens retournent dans leur village moldave. La seule chose qui leur reste du passé est leur musique qu'ils jouent lors des mariages, des baptêmes et des enterrements. Elle est leur fierté.

Under Communism, the brass bands of the rural Romanian population enjoyed their hour of glory. As the country reverses the processes of industrialisation, the musicians return to the Moldavian village; music is the only vestigial token of the past, which they uphold with pride as a rite of passage during marriages, baptisms and funerals.
