John Marshall (1932-2005) is renowned for his film works mainly merged into two themes. One of them is associated with the Kalahari Desert! Kung Bushmen (27 films shot between 1957 and 2003), the other one is associated with Pittsburgh Police (20 films shot between 1970and 1973).
His films on! Kung Bushmen, the first ones date back to the beginning of the 50's, are essential works, which deal as well with everyday life as with rituals. These films show how, as a filmmaker, John Marshall was as sensitive as rigorous.
John Marshall took political stands in favor of Bushmen facing the contemporary world and in favor of civil rights in the U.S (Pittsburgh Police series). With Frederick Wiseman, he also directed Titicut Follies (1967).
In 1968, with Timothy Asch, anthropologist and filmmaker, John Marshall founded the Documentary Educational Resources (DER), designed to produce and sell ethnographic and documentary films.
Program organise and present by Cynthia Close, Director of the DER and Philippe Lourdou, Ethnologue et Cinéaste.
